IBO Certified: Sustainability with a System

In an era where sustainable and healthy building is increasingly becoming the norm, materials with transparently tested environmental and health compatibility are gaining attention. With the IBO quality seal from the Austrian Institute for Healthy and Ecological Building, Rieder’s facade elements carry a recognised certification that fully meets these demands.

What is the IBO Quality Seal?

The IBO quality seal identifies building materials that excel in a comprehensive building biology and ecological assessment. Unlike conventional tests that mainly focus on technical usability, the IBO also evaluates the impact on indoor climate, air quality, and thermal comfort. Additionally, the seal takes into account environmental effects across the entire life cycle and the design potential in architectural contexts. The influence on user health and well-being is also considered.

The goal is to identify materials that are safe for both people and the environment, and fit for the future. The evaluation is based on a thorough analysis of ingredients, emissions, recyclability, and the overall ecological footprint from production to disposal. The results are documented in a detailed test report.

Rieder Products in the Testing Process

As a manufacturer of innovative glassfibre reinforced concrete facade solutions, Rieder has long stood for environmental responsibility, technological innovation, and design excellence. The products have been certified with the IBO quality seal since June 2007 and are subject to regular follow-up assessments, most recently confirmed through to April 2026. This ongoing certification proves the consistent adherence to high standards in building biology and ecological construction.

The latest assessment once again confirmed the consistently positive characteristics of the facade elements: the products are made predominantly from mineral-based raw materials and, when used correctly, have no harmful effects on human health or the environment. They are non-combustible and meet stringent requirements for building safety. Moreover, the elements can be easily dismantled and reused, making an important contribution to the circular economy. This is complemented by a certified environmental management system in accordance with ISO 14001, as well as the company’s active commitment to environmental goals at the operational level.

These features make the products not only technically and aesthetically appealing but also truly sustainable – from production to deconstruction.

Added Value for Architecture

Building materials influence much more than just structural performance – they also affect indoor air quality, room climate, and even mental well-being. For architects, planners, and developers, choosing IBO-certified products means a high level of verified safety and transparency. In addition, such materials are positively rated in building certification systems like klimaaktiv or Total Quality Building (TQB), potentially unlocking further funding opportunities for sustainable construction projects. They also provide a reliable basis for meeting health and environmental standards.

Sustainability That Makes a Statement

Facade elements are the face of a building – and a powerful expression of its values. The fact that Rieder’s products öko skin and concrete skin bear the IBO quality seal highlights the company’s ethos: design, functionality, and environmental responsibility go hand in hand. The IBO quality seal is a mark of excellence for sustainable architecture – and an essential building block on the path to responsible, future-oriented construction.
