2nd CrossConnect Expert Forum

Innovative materials as drivers of the construction transition
How can the construction industry become more resource-efficient, higher-performing and at the same time economically viable? And what role do innovative materials such as timber, carbon, concrete, clay and natural fibres play in this context?
These key questions were at the heart of the 2nd CrossConnect Expert Forum, held from 18 to 20 May 2026 in Bad Tölz and Benediktbeuern. The forum was organised by the clusters MAI Carbon and CU Bau of Composites United e.V., as well as the Cluster Initiative Forest and Wood in Bavaria. The event focused on current developments in innovative materials and construction methods, highlighting how they can sustainably transform the planning, construction and operation of buildings.

When materials work together
The focus was on how new materials can realise their full potential in construction through targeted combination. Circular construction methods and intelligent material combinations were discussed as key drivers of the construction transition. They make it possible to purposefully utilise the specific properties of different materials, thereby unlocking new structural and ecological potential.
Timber and concrete in practical focus

Rieder was also represented at the forum: Manfred Kirnberger presented the combination of timber and concrete in his lecture. He highlighted the benefits of this hybrid construction method and showcased selected reference projects from practice, demonstrating its potential in a compelling way.
The forum provided an important platform for exchange between research, planning and practice and delivered valuable impulses for the further development of sustainable construction.
